Erected in 1749, but for some forgotten cause, possibly a subsidence in the walls,it was taken down, the stones being marked, and rebuilt in 1806. In olden times this was the site of the Market Cross of the English town. From the beginning of the 14th century to the middle of the 17th century this was the chief centre of the commercial and municipal life of Ross. In its design the ideas of Kent a London architect of the time were obviously followed. Visitors to London who have passed Whitehall (the Horse Guards) can hardly have failed to recognise the likeness between the clock towers.
