Five church sites are known within the walls of New Ross: St Mary's, St Michael's, St Saviour's, and the Franciscan and Augustinian Friaries. St Mary's is the only one of which substantial portions remain. It was founded in the early thirteenth century by William Marshall or perhpas his wife Isobel. While the chancel and both transepts remain substantially intact, they are currently cut off from each other, as the chancel and a more modern nave continue in use, while the two transepts are roofless. A medieval church, it was one of the biggest churches in ireland during the medieval era.
