New Ross was founded by William Marshall c.1200, but its walling was only begun in 1265 when a poem records how each day, a different group of people did the work, culminating on Sunday with the ladies. Although written by a friar, the poem records the great beauty of the ladies involved, including the information that the wealthier ladies had a convivial party afterwards at which much whisky was consumed. This was initially one of four original gates.
